Spelling and grammar were under constant scrutiny in every classroom during the Boarding School years.  Wherever possible al staff stepped up to assist in the remediation of  error in the use of the English language — all the while taking delight in the unique language of the surrounding community that combined Old English with local variations in the use of English.

This is just one aid used by instructors to attempt to call attention to a list of work likely to be used frequently and to be mis-spelled.  To be memorized by the students, the list also pulled from achievement tests and other measures of a student’s English competency.
