MARILYNN VAN DER VLIET Staff

Marilynn Van Der Vliet was known as a hard worker who was devoted to whatever position she held. Her work experience included a variety of occupations, such as a miner in a Kentucky coal mine and as a corrections officer at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio (CCNO) from 1987 until the early 2000s. in her early days, while living in Kentucky, she also served as a longtime bookkeeper for the Pine Mountain Settlement School (PMSS) from 1962 through March 30, 1970.

During the time Miss Van Der Vliet was employed by PMSS, she was a close friend of Helen Lee Guilford who taught seventh and eighth grade in the 1968-1969 school year. During their 50 years of friendship, they were often employed together at the same workplaces and in mission work abroad.

MARILYNN VAN DER VLIET: After Pine Mountain

An active member of her church, Zion Church of Wauseon (Ohio), she served in many of the church’s missions at home and abroad, including work in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Ecuador, often with her friend Helen. Her obituary states, “Memorial contributions may be made to Henderson Settlement School (in Frakes, Kentucky), a mission that was near and dear to Marilynn’s heart.”

Marilynn was born on Dec. 15, 1935, to Harry and Elsie (Benesema) Van Der Vliet in St. Anne, Illinois. She had two brothers, Roger and Davis, and a twin sister, Carolyn.

Marilynn M. Van Der Vliet died at age 87 on Feb. 17, 2023. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, the family cemetery in Wichert, Illinois.
