GRACE M. ROOD STORIES Darrell

During the Second World War, Mrs. Maud Jones was automatically retired from her school teaching position. She. was still in good health, and so was looking around for some opportunity to work, when she learned that, due to great shortages, some young women with little more than a high school education. were taken on as teachers. And so she found work in a school in Pine Mountain, KY as a third grade teacher.

She joined the other teachers in a class given one night in the county seat. Each person was asked to pick out a child., a problem type, and keep a journal on him all year, sharing the problems in the class. Mrs. Jones picked out Darrell, a quiet, bright – eyed, untidy child, as her problem.

After a couple more years, she returned to her apartment in Chicago. About 10 years later, her phone rang one Sunday afternoon. The conversation went like this:  ” Is this Mrs Jones?”  “Yes.” ” “Is this Mrs Maude Jones that taught at Pine Mountain?” “Yes.” ” Is this Mrs Jones that taught 3rd grade?”  “Yes.”

Apparently satisfied, the caller said in a fast speech, “Well, This is your boy, Daryl C.. I’m graduating next Sunday at Redbird High School. Will you come to my graduation?”

“y Mrs Jones hesitated for a moment, then thought she’d be interested in seeing Pine Mountain again, so replied, “Yes, I think I can.”  There was a relieved sigh, and then a simple “Thank you” as he hung up the phone.

Flew down, staying with friends who drove her over for the day. Darryl spotted the car and was practically in it before it stopped. ” Taking her by the arm, he joyfully pulled her around, proud to say, This is my third grade teacher, come all the way from Chicago to see me graduate.” He had no other guests, but his teacher all the way from Chicago made up for it.

Mrs. Jones was happy to know that he had remembered her enough to get her address and phone number.
