GRACE M. ROOD STORIES ‘Lum and Bertha and Little Joe

One cold, wintry, snowy night, I was aroused by a knock at the hospital door. There stood tall, gloomy faced, Scared – looking. ‘Lum And his very concerned – looking wife, Bertha. in his arms, well covered up by a blanket, was his 9.- month – old son, Joe.. They had walked two miles out of Little Laurel Creek, then “raised up” a man living on a road. He had brought them the rest of the way in his truck. As ‘Lum ” and Bertha started to fold back the blankets, he said, with a sorrowful voice, “I believe hits dead.” Just then, curly haired little Joe’s face, with a smile on it, appeared from the depths.’ A surprised, shameful look appeared on ‘Lum’s face. Bertha, with a sweet smile, took little Joe from her husband’s arms.

Why did it happen thus? Probably they were all together in their cabin, with the doors closed to keep in the heat. From the open fireplace, And the child appeared about to die; then the change to the outside air restored his breathing.

They stayed with us until after daylight, and then with a little bread and milk, started on their long trudge home.
