MEDICAL 1955 Health Care Services and Facilities in the Southern Appalachian Region

One of the first systematic studies of health resources of the Southern Appalachian area, this 30-page booklet assumes that “Southern Appalachia is an entity; that it is different. This difference, it is suggested in the study, should be the object of social research of the most penetrating type.” Robert M. Metcalfe, M.D, Council of the Southern Mountains, was appointed to direct the study that covered a nine-state area:

The Council is pleased to make this survey [on health care services and facilities, 1955] available to all who have an interest in health problems. In addition to the information summarized in this printed report, statistical details for each of the 257 counties in the nine states area are available in the files of the Council of the Southern Mountains.
