086 PHOTOGRAPHS V LW School Clubs Handwork

Series 086 VII Life and Work- Schools, Clubs, Handwork in the Pine Mountain Settlement School Records, 1913-1984 is among the files copied by the Berea College Southern Appalachian Archives during the 1983 NEH Settlement Institutions of Appalachia (SIA) project.  This series contains images of School clubs and handiwork classes at Pine Mountain during the 1940s through the 1970s.

Total images in Series VII Files 84-86 are 47.  The total number of photographs selected by Berea from the comprehensive PMSS collection were 717. The Berea project selectively pulled images from among the  3,318 mounted prints now on file in the Boy’s House Archive.

INDUSTRIAL AND CRAFT TRAINING in the COMMUNITY COOPERATIVE SCHOOL

Many of the activities captured in the photographs include classroom instruction, craft projects, woodworking shop, making musical instruments and weaving. During the Community Cooperative School years craft activities for the community were also provided after school hours and when the School closed many of the craft and woodworking opportunities were continued for the community.

Also within the collection are a scattering of images from the 1940s when photographers Ray Garner and his wife Virginia came as representatives of the Harmon Foundation and on the request of Pine Mountain, to photograph life at the campus. Ray Garner later became an internationally known photographer who developed several unique techniques in documentary film-craft. The industrial arts activities during the 1940s were integral to the educational programs of the school and were often part of the labor assignment of the students. The industrial training activities included such instruction as repairing automobiles, furniture woodcraft, weaving runners, coverlets and other textiles, sewing and other activities. The atmosphere was enriched by the industrial training but also was complemented by a full academic program.

COMMUNITY COOPERATIVE SCHOOL CLASSROOM ACTIVITY

The images from the Community School days depict classroom activities and craft programs integrated into the curriculum and also offered after school hours. The activities depicted include woodworking, sewing, weaving, and other activities as captured by various unidentified photographers. Also included are selected images of students from the kindergarten school that was known as “Little School,” run by Pine Mountain in cooperation with Head Start.

Many of the staff and the students are identified in this set of images and include such well-known instructors as Cora Campbell, Gerna Campbell, Principal of the Community School, Alvin Boggs, former Director of the School, Edna Patterson, an accomplished weaver and Mary Rogers, wife of former Director Burton Rogers, and others. The students are identified where known.

Please contact the Pine Mountain Office if you can assist in identifying students in the photographs. office@pinemountainsettlementschool.com
