The following are lists of the image titles and contents, in chronological order, of letters of Abby Winch Christensen, a PMSS worker who taught folk dancing, weaving, and mechanical drawing at various times from 1924 until 1949. 

NOTE: PMSS letters are carbon copies of typewritten pages for the PMSS files and therefore unsigned. Letters from Christensen are handwritten. Miss Christensen’s letters are from Beaufort, NC, unless indicated otherwise.

NOTE: The 1933 correspondence largely pertains to Abby W. Christensen’s return to Pine Mountain Settlement School for a month’s stay.

01-05 christensen_1933-03-10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e (5 pages). March 10, 1933. Abby W. Christensen to Glyn Morris. “I’m so glad you want me to come, and so glad that you want to keep the dancing alive at Pine Mountain. It does seem to make a special appeal to the children there … I presume you do not wish to have “May Day’ this year – it involves such risk.” Asks about plans to arrive at PMSS; the music to be played for the sword dance; asks that a list of children be sent to Miss [Dorothy] Bolles.

06 christensen_1933-03-16. March 16, 1933. Glyn Morris to Abby W. Christensen. Indicates the preferred date of her arrival at PMSS; suggests that she can stay at Pole House with Miss Bolles, Big Log or Laurel House.

07-10,13 christensen_1933-03-21a, 21b, 21c, 21d, 21g (7 pages). March 21, 1933. Abby W. Christensen to Glyn Morris. Describes her travel plans and lodging choice; plans to write to Damon Lewis at Laden to be prepared with a mule for the trip over Pine Mt. (*11 & 12 were duplicates and have been removed.)

14 christensen_1933-03-28. March 28, 1933. Glyn Morris to Abby W. Christensen. Offers to help bring her over the mountain in his car; offers advice about traveling to PMSS.

15 christensen_1933-05-10. May 10, 1933. Glyn Morris to Abby W. Christensen. Thanks her for her stay at PMSS.

16,* 18-20 christensen_1933-06-03a, 08b, 03b, 5d (4 pages). June 5, 1933. Abby W. Christensen to Alice Cobb. Outlines plans for her arrival: “I think I’d like to have Grace Lewis bring the med[ical] set[tlement] horse up to P.M. and leave it there for me to mount & ride the last lap of the way.” (*17 was a duplicate and has been removed.)

21 christensen_1933-06-12. May 12, 1933. Glyn Morris to Abby W. Christensen. Welcomes her to the Medical Settlement; offers $50 a month, plus $30 for maintenance, milk, and a horse.

22 christensen_1933-06-23. May 26, 1933. Alice Cobb to Abby W. Christensen. Provides Miss Merrill‘s address; explains the mail route to Medical Settlement; Zande House activities. “We…always spend most of the evening doing the Country dances. The children are never tired of them.”

23-24 christensen_1933-6-30thurs, 30thurs_a. Thursday, [n.d.], 1933. Abby W. Christensen to Alice Cobb. Expresses disappointment that Cobb could not attend their “rather rowdy party.” Asked for advice concerning switching her horse (Maud) with the one at Line Fork; lists needed feed.
