Nurse, Medical Settlement – Big Laurel, 1921-1922
Anna Henneberger served as a nurse in 1921-1922 at the Medical Settlement – Big Laurel, a satellite facility of the Pine Mountain Settlement School.
The Medical Settlement at Big Laurel was one of two outposts that Miss Katherine Pettit, PMSS co-director, established in an effort to serve a larger community with medical support and education. Its earliest structure, the “Cabin,” was completed in 1919. The second outpost was Line Fork Settlement. Their administrative structure was quasi-autonomous but the outposts reported to the Pine Mountain directors and were included in all fundraising and annual reports.
Anna Henneberger is mentioned in two 1922 letters to Harriet Butler from Ethel de Long Zande, PMSS co-director. (Harriet Butler was the first nurse hired by Katherine Pettit to accompany Dr. Grace Huse at the Medical Settlement, serving from 1919 to 1924.) The following are excerpts from her letters about Anna:

As you know, the subscription school didn’t work out. I think that Miss Henneberger and Miss Peters will be more likely to make a real go of it….
May 5, 1922. Two-page letter to Harriet Butler while she was visiting family in St. Louis, Missouri, at the time, from Ethel Zande. (Images 016-016a)
Miss Henneberger would be most forlorn if she had to go away [on vacation] from there [Big Laurel] now. She is very loyal to you and speaks of you really beautifully. I am speaking now of the intimate comments she makes, not to me but to others, and I think we are fortunate in having someone down there who really wants to cooperate.
