PMSS CORRESPONDENCE

The correspondence collections of Esther Weller Burkhard and Fred J. Burkhard are located under the individual until their departure from Pine Mountain Settlement School, unless the material is shared by the couple. The materials that are most frequently shared are the photographs. However, ephemera such as clipping files, publications produced by Pine Mountain Settlement School, and publications that are from other sources are also aggregated under the two former staff members, in the Esther and Fred Burkhard Collections.

During the years that Fred and Esther were at Pine Mountain Settlement School, the correspondence specific to Fred Burkhard is found under Fred and the correspondence specific to Esther Weller Burkhard is found under Esther. This correspondence centers on the hire of the two professionals and correspondence with the Director and staff at the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Following the marriage of Fred and Esther, the bulk of the correspondence is arranged by year and includes the personal correspondence of both Fred and Esther and correspondence addressed to the two Burkhard.  Correspondence with staff and students is linked in the profiles of the individual staff and students.

The photographs gathered by Esther and Fred Burkhard and their family are many and cover their Pine Mountain year as well as later visits to the School and photographic images shared by their friends and former students. Also included are photographs taken by the Burkhard’s daughter Elanor. The photographs cover from c. 1930s to the present.  Work is ongoing to determine duplicates within the PMSS holdings as well as within the Burkhard collection. Again, many of the photographs duplicate images held in other collections at Pine Mountain Settlement School. These duplicates have been included with the Fred and Esther Burkhard materials to enrich the identification associated with similar photographs in the Pine Mountain Settlement School collections. The duplicates often provide identifications that are missing in other albums and collections. Very often the inscriptions on the reverse of the photograph identify time, place and individuals. This identifying information has been transcribed and associated with the photograph when it appears. (See examples below.)

When the item is not identified by date or location or person, it has been placed in “miscellaneous” photographs. Occasionally materials have been found in the Burkhard donation that are more appropriately removed and placed with an associated individual or collection, such as the Berea College Years Photo Album (see below). Occasionally duplicate material has been recorded but not fully annotated in the Burkhard collection.

With the permission of the family, the small album, Berea College Years Photo Album has been donated to and forwarded to Berea College where Fred Burkhard went to college. The photographs in this particular album cover Fred’s years at the college and do not contain images or reference to Pine Mountain Settlement School. Contact Berea College for access to the Berea College Years Photo Album.
