… (Former member of the Advisory Council and wife of former Berea President and Chairman of the PMSS Board, Dr. Francis Hutchins) was held in the Chapel at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, October 12.

Ray Bird was elected Alumni trustee for the unexpired term of August Angel. Walter Blackson was elected as second Alumni trustee. Gordon McKinney, Director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College was elected to the Board of Trustees at its Fall meeting. At the Spring meeting Dr. Larry Shinn, Berea College President, and Ms. Janet Whitaker, KET, were elected as Trustees. Mş. Nancy Shinn was appointed a non-Board member of the Education Committee, and a member of the Advisory Council.

PMSS entered a contract with the Fifth Third Bank of Kentucky, Inc., to serve as investment manager and manager of PMSS endowment and related funds.

An ad hoc committee, consisting of Bill Leach, Lois Hoskins, Jamie Greene, Jane Hobgood and members of the Executive Committee, was named to begin the search for a new PMSS Director.

The “PMSS local service area” was re-defined to include Harlan, Leslie, Letcher and Perry counties.

The gift shop was moved to the renovated east room of Boys House (Library).

The committee on search for a new director reported follow-up on six of twelve completed applications. The net result was one viable candidate, who was to be interviewed by committee and staff members.

The Education Committee proceeded with investigation of possibilities for a Pine Mountain web site on the Inter-net.

The Trustees’ Community Resources and Services Committee reported playground equipment improvement, funded by gifts from local industries.

Construction proceeded on a Stonemill log house at the Far House site. The Trustees voted that the new building would continue to carry the historic name “Far House.”

Two health-related programs, Body Recall (an exercise program) and Health Care Advisor (a staff member who assisted community members with health-related problems), were located in Pine Mountain facilities, although independently financed.
