Edrye Wilson Burdine came to Pine Mountain in 1935 with her husband, Howard Burdine, who had been offered the position of Farmer at Pine Mountain School. Glyn Morris hired Edrye as a teacher of mathematics and geometry. She also served as a housemother for the boys of Farm House and Boy’s House, the two main houses for male attendees at Pine Mountain.

Unlike her husband, Howard, Edrye did not attend Pine Mountain Settlement School. Like her husband, Edrye was a graduate of Berea College, Kentucky, where she had prepared for teaching. Also, like her husband, she had multiple talents that did not go unnoticed by Glyn Morris, the School’s director at the time. When Morris and Arthur Dodd, the pianist for the group, proposed a national tour for the Pine Mountain Settlement School Girls’ Octet he chose Edrye to accompany the girls as a chaperone. The very successful fund-raising tour of 1936 traveled to the home of Henry Ford, to many clubs such as the Episcopal Church Club of the Southern Ohio Diocese, and to the homes of School trustees and other venues.

Edrye Wilson was born December 10, 1909, to Kentucky parents Tommie and Tabitha Wilson. Her father was a farmer and her mother a housewife. She died March 9, 1989, in HIghlands, Florida.

In the correspondence of Howard Burdine at Pine Mountain is found the following letter:

May 18, 1935

Mrs. Howard Burdine,
Pine Mountain,
Kentucky.

Dear Mrs. Burdine:

I am sorry that I am not here to initiate you into the duties of housemother, but will leave to Miss [Alice] Cobb the task of getting you started. Much of the work must be left to your own judgment. The most advisable thing for me to suggest now is to read very carefully the little black book of rules, which you will secure at the office.

Mrs. Faulkner will pass on to you whatever hints she will think advisable, and I am sure that Howard is trained well in the spirit of Pine Mountain, and can help you a great deal.

The important thing, of course, is to remember the responsibility we have to those in our care, and our responsibility to our contributors and our neighbors. This of course means that we must use care and diligence every minute, so that nothing happens which will reflect on the character of the school.

Howard has told me that you are a good disciplinarian so I will not worry about your having the boys get to bed on time every night, or about the order in the house.

I go away feeling very confident that everything is in good hands, and that you can carry on without any difficulty.

Sincerely yours,
[unsigned, probably Glyn Morris]
