ESTHER AND FRED BURKHARD Photographs Centennial 2013 Celebration

The Centennial Celebration at Pine Mountain took place in 2013 and was a simple ceremony that paid tribute to the founders of the School and to the many students who passed through the educational programs at the institution. A special tribute was paid to the Environmental Education program and the many individuals who have contributed to that important educational focus of the institution. An Honor Guard was in attendance, led by Fred Hall, a former student, and member of the Board of Trustees. James Greene III gave remarks on the institution’s history, and Helen Hayes Wykle spoke very briefly to the lasting legacy of the multitude of students who have passed through the gates of the School and have left their mark on their respective communities.

While the fanfare was small, the sentiments of all who attended this celebration ran large and deep. The following photographic tribute captured by Elanor Burkhard reflects her love of the School. And, as a person born at the School, Elanor continued as one of its most loyal supporters and champions. She visually captured the essence of this important celebration. Her images reflect some of the familiar and the personal attachments that she and others have for the School. Her visual record of this 100-year milestone in the continuing history of this remarkable Settlement School details some of the key monuments of the institution, some of the buildings of the institution, some activities of the day, and captures the thoughtful mood of some of those who attended.
