NORA HOWARD Student, 1921-1927

Nora Howard was a student at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the Boarding School years from January 3, 1921, until May 27, 1927. Both Nora and her sister, Harriet (“Hattie”) Howard, who later attended Pine Mountain, were born in Partridge, Kentucky, where their father, John N. Howard, worked as a farmer and a miner. Margaret Jane Jenkins Howard, the mother of Nora and Hattie, lived for a time at Wallins Creek, Kentucky, and in 1925 her address was Poor Fork, Kentucky. Later, the family moved to Laurel County, Kentucky, where John Howard farmed.

Although Nora was born in Partridge, Kentucky, (October 13, 1907), another record also shows her birthplace as Cumberland, Kentucky. She was admitted to Pine Mountain in 1921 when she was in the 4th grade. She was first placed on a waiting list but was then accepted. Also in 1921, Nora wrote to Katherine Pettit and appealed to Pine Mountain to allow her younger sister, Harriet, to also attend the School. Katherine Pettit noted that her sister was too young (under 14) to attend at the time. Hattie was finally admitted to join her sister in the Fall of 1922.

Nora first attended Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1921 as a fifth-grader [age 15] and apparently completed grade school in 1923 at age 17. She then attended part of high school, leaving the School for Berea (KY) College in the Fall of 1927. By September 1927, Nora was writing from Berea College where she was working at Boone Tavern and going to school [?]. She was then 21 years old. Harriet remained at Pine Mountain, but by 1928 her sister Nora was working to enroll her at Berea.

Their records reveal two very bright and socially gregarious girls who established strong connections with the staff at the School, particularly co-directors, Ethel de Long Zande and Katherine Pettit. The girls sometimes challenged the staff with their curiosity and social interests and their record is the testimony to the struggle of the young women as they asserted their independence from family as well as institutional authority. Their will to succeed is, however, what ultimately remains. Both girls went on to successful careers and lives.
