TAGS: Ellen Gundersen Wolfe, Jim Wolfe, Quaker Work Camp, American Friends Service Committee, Quakers, volunteerism, Pine Mountain Settlement School work programs, Tool Shed II, Some Form of Peace
In July through August of 1951 Ellen Gundersen Wolfe and Jim Wolfe came to Pine Mountain as part of the Quaker Work Camp project to build a Tool Shed for Pine Mountain Settlement School to replace an old Tool Shed. They then returned many times across the years.
In 1953 the Wolfe couple returned to Pine Mountain from March until July to work as volunteers, Ellen as a nurse’s aide and Jim as the business manager for the School’s hospital. Ellen also served as an editor for the staff newsletter, “Pine Mountain Ears” from May through July 1953. At that time they also directed another camp for their Quaker associates. Their work then became an annual event that brought the Quakers to the School to work on much-needed projects for the School for several succeeding years.
The work at the School was formative for the couple and in 1987 they wrote a small book, Some Form of Peace. The book describes their work with the American Friends Service Committee and briefly describes their engagement with Pine Mountain Settlement and Appalachia. An excerpt was shared by the Wolfe couple covering the Quaker Work Camp at Pine Mountain School and is reproduced in a shared Scrapbook of the Quaker Work Camp.
