“SECOND GENERATION” ALBUM

The “Second Generation” album was found among the files of Burton Rogers brought to the campus just prior to his death in 2007. Burton Rogers was a long-time staff worker and later Director of Pine Mountain Settlement School from 1949-1973. The origin of the photograph album is not known but many of the photographs appear to date from the early 1930s and many include staff from the School and duplicate images found in other albums.

The small album has “Second Generation” hand-written on the front top right-hand corner in white ink and below the name are the Roman numerals, VIII, suggesting it may fit with the inventoried collections that Berea recorded of the Pine Mountain archive in the 1980s. Or, possibly it is one among several other albums in a series that are of unknown origin as the Roman numeral does not match the Berea cataloging. The recorder is not known.

The photographs in the album mainly include children of former Pine Mountain workers and the Pine Mountain community. Represented are the Zande and the Hook families, Line Fork Settlement worker, Isabella McLennan, Oscar and Mallie Begley, and others. Some individuals do not seem to have a direct connection to Pine Mountain, but further research may reveal the connections.

The album has 49 pages of which only 14 contain photographs. There are 22 photographs total in the album. One item is loose and is the image of “Mother” de Long, or Arabella de Long, mother of Ethel de Long, one of the school’s founders. Also included in the album is a loose engraving of William Creech as a young man by Elizabeth Telling, taken from his Civil War tin-type portrait.
