AILEENE LEWIS NESBITT Album

MEDICAL SETTLEMENT BIG LAUREL,1923-1925

Aileene Lewis Nesbitt worked at the Medical Settlement at Big Laurel from October 1923 until February 1925, not long after the settlement was established. The Medical Settlement was a satellite location for the Pine Mountain Settlement School.

While at the Medical Settlement she met Charles F. Nesbitt who was sent to Pine Mountain by Candler Seminary at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and assigned to the Big Laurel facility in the summer of 1923. Aileene and Charles fell in love and later married.  

The images in this 42-page album date from the time Aileene and Charles were in residence at the Medical Settlement. The condition of the album is fragile with many brittle pages and damaged images. There are about 100 images in the album and an additional 10 items of printed material. Unlike many early albums, the photographs do not appear to be duplicates of frequently circulated photographs.

The album was donated on October 24, 2006, by Mary Alice Nesbitt, the daughter-in-law of Aileene Lewis Nesbitt. Mrs. Nesbitt writes in a letter accompanying the album that “Surely some of these families are still around and might treasure these pictures.” We thought so, as well, and are pleased to make the album available.

Pine Mountain school appreciates this thoughtful gift and the opportunity to share this visual history with the local community and with those who may be interested in the community of Big Laurel, Kentucky, and life in eastern Kentucky in the early 1920s.
