TAGS: Viola Sullivan Stiles Trustee, Mrs. Russell Stiles, PMSS Board of Trustees, General Advisory Board, Executive Committee, Katherine Pettit, Ethel de Long, Elizabeth Hench

Miss Viola Sullivan (later, Mrs. Russell Stiles) was among the original Trustees of the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Her first term of office, selected by lot, was for three years. Her service was evidently extended, as records show her as a Trustee at least until 1920.

When the General Advisory Board was created at the end of 1913, the School’s first year, Miss Sullivan was one of its 12 members. The members had been appointed by the Executive Committee composed of the School’s co-founders, Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The General Advisory Board, which included all members of the original Board of Trustees, had “the power to direct and shape the policies of the school, to vote at all Board meetings, and to control the actions of the Board of Trustees,” according to a report written by the Board’s secretary, Elizabeth Hench, concerning the first annual meeting of the PMSS Board of Trustees, January 3, 1914, in Lexington, Kentucky.

From the General Advisory Board, the School’s seven legal representatives were elected. This Board of Trustees was “the entity required by the State of Kentucky to form the corporation, and to give it legal standing.” Miss Sullivan was again included.

Miss Sullivan was present at that first annual Board meeting in Lexington, Kentucky.
