INTRODUCTION: EVENTS May Day 1949
In 1949, the last year of the Boarding School at Pine Mountain Settlement School, May Day was in full swing. The transcription and images of the event’s program (see below) provide a list of the typical dances performed during this celebration. The list includes such favorites as Morris Dances (including the Bacca Pipes Jig); Hunsdon House; Picking- up-Sticks; The Weaver’s Dance (where all dancers are wearing something that they themselves wove); Cumberland Square Eight; Hole in the Wall; North Skelton Sword Dance; and others.
