PINE MOUNTAIN EARS: Introduction

The Pine Mountain Settlement School staff newsletter, Pine Mountain Ears, was produced from 1949 until 1956. It was edited by Dorothy Nace, a School staff member from 1949 until December 1952. Ellen Gundersen Wolfe served for several months as the editor from May 6, 1953, until July 18, 1953 (33-49), after which Dorothy Nace resumed her editorial responsibilities. 

Pine Mountain Ears was an informal publication that addressed changes at the School, particularly those related to the change from a boarding school to a Community School environment. The newsletter describes shifts in staffing and introduces new staff. It also details the activities of alumni of the Boarding School staff and students and of the new Community School students and their parents. The narrative is informal and chatty but contains valuable information regarding educational transitions and the new relationship of the School with the Harlan County Public Schools systems.

The Issues for Pine Mountain Ears has been divided into four separate pages for easier viewing. The featured images are taken from the Pine Mountain Archive and have been added for interest. They were not part of the original newsletters.
