This collaborative collection was compiled by the Settlement Institutions of Appalachia (SIA) / Berea College Research Resources Project and was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The project was developed in 1979 for the purpose of organizing and preserving the original records and photographs of the Settlement Institutions of Appalachia (SIA) and copying those of historical value to form a central research collection at Berea College.

Part A: These PMSS archival records were selected and organized in 1982. Those having administrative, legal or historical value were microfilmed at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and all then returned to Pine Mountain. The resultant microfilm master negative is owned by Berea College. A user copy is available for researchers. However, Berea College does not own the copyright for Pine Mountain Settlement School’s original archival holdings (documents and photographs) held in the collections at the school. The collaborative microfilm edition does not represent materials not shared with Berea and materials created after 1983. As the holder of the intellectual property rights, Pine Mountain Settlement School requires researchers to exercise their responsibility to secure permission to publish from Pine Mountain Settlement School or its successors and assigns so records may be maintained for the PMSS holdings,

Part B: The Pine Mountain Settlement School photographs were organized and copied in 1985. Copy negatives and a set of copy prints are held by Berea College. A duplicate set of copy prints and all originals were returned to Pine Mountain Settlement School.  Copy/contact prints are held in the Director’s Office cabinets. The ORIGINALS are held in the PMSS Archive Annex room in a fire-proof filing cabinet as well as in discreet collections and boxed sets, in the larger collection. See PHOTOGRAPHS Guide for a full description of holdings and locations.

Permission has been granted by Pine Mountain Settlement School for Berea College to reproduce all or part of the school’s photographs and to use them in slide or film presentations, display them or loan them for display, and to allow their use by researchers for reproduction and publication. The proper credit line for all of the above uses shall be, “Pine Mountain Settlement School Photographic Collection, Berea College Southern Appalachian Archives.”
