FLORENCE HOUGHTON JONES, Wife of Dr. Tracy Jones, PMSS Doctor

TAGS: Florence Houghton Jones; Dr. Tracy Jones; doctors; teachers; Community School students; Harlan, KY

Florence Houghton Jones was the wife of Dr. Tracy Jones, who was a medical doctor at the Pine Mountain Settlement School from February 1952 until June 1955.

Florence came to Eastern Kentucky to teach and settled for a time in Coxton, Kentucky, a coal-mining town just east of Harlan, the main town in Harlan County. Teaching was difficult with the itinerate population of the coal camp and her attention soon turned to social work. It was during her time working with social services that she met Dr. Tracy Jones who was practicing medicine in the county.

Beginning in 1952, Dr. Jones worked part-time at Pine Mountain while maintaining his own practice in Harlan, Kentucky. However, a year later he became head of the new hospital in the West Wind building on the PMSS campus. Consequently, the family moved to PMSS’s Zande House, along with their four daughters: Barbara (b. 1942), Bronwynn (b.1943), Mary Fairchild and Ruth Ellen.

Three of the Jones children are found in the PMSS Community School Student Lists. They attended Community School in the mid-1950s following their family’s arrival on the PMSS campus. The youngest child, Ruth, was not yet of school age.

Barbara Jones Smith, the oldest daughter of Dr. Tracy Jones and Florence Houghton Jones, submitted the following narrative (date unknown) about her mother to the PMSS Collections. (She also wrote about her father, a transcription of which is on the page for Dr. Tracy Jones.)

Florence Houghton Jones

“Florence Houghton Jones, the youngest and only girl (4 brothers) was born and raised in Lynn, Mass., but lived in several cities within Mass. The Houghtons are descendants of William Brewster (Mayflower passenger).

At some point, my grandfather taught at Westtown School which is a private, pre-school-12th grade college prep school in Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, mother continued her university training in Pennsylvania (I’m always confused as to which university she attended aka Pennsylvania State or University of Pennsylvania.) She was always frustrated that she was one course shy from completing her Masters Degree and was never able to come to complete that degree.

After attempting to teach which did not work out, she became a social worker in the SE part of Ky which meant determining if a family qualified for financial assistance. At this point, she met my dad.”

Barbara Jones Smith, Daughter

The records of Massachusetts Births indicate that Florence Houghton was born on June 7, 1909, in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her parents were George Euclid Houghton, a teacher, and Edith (Fairchild) Houghton. Her four brothers are listed in the 1910 U.S. Census as Willard F., Daniel Eugene, George Elwood and Fairchild Edward.
