CATHERINE REINHARDT Staff: At Pine Mountain

In 1997 Catherine Reinhardt received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Auburn University in Alabama. Soon after, she served as an intern for the Environmental Education (EE) program at Pine Mountain Settlement School (PMSS). Trained as a teacher, she was instrumental in mapping the activities of the Environmental Education program to the Standard Course of study mandated by the state of Kentucky.

Catherine also used her many artistic talents in the programs at the School and, following her departure, drafted a design for those hikers who braved the steep hike to the “Summit” of Pine Mountain. Her T-shirt for the School with the message, “I Survived the Summit,” a reference to hiking to the top of Pine Mountain, continues to be a hit with many parents and students and visitors to the School who have made that arduous climb to the top of the ridge overlooking the School.

CATHERINE REINHARDT: After Pine Mountain

Since her time at Pine Mountain, Catherine continued to hone her talents in the arts and in teaching. She went on to earn a Master’s of Teaching in Special Education and Elementary Education at the University of Virginia in 2000. For the next several years she worked as an adjunct professor at the Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and assistant director and teacher at Triad Academy in Winston Salem, NC.

Catherine received a Master’s of Fine Art from Idaho State University (ISU) in 2012. She stayed at Idaho State University for another ten years as an adjunct professor teaching art classes. Meanwhile, Catherine has pursued a career as a professional artist. An exhibit of her work at the Idaho State University Library in 2013, is described in an ISU News article:

Reinhardt’s prints, paintings, and mixed media works explore the entangled notions of identity, place and home as the complex product of our rational and spiritual understanding of our world. … In these works, vibrant colors, imagery of home and the natural world are juxtaposed with the diagrams, charts, and trappings of the scientific, in an attempt to present the complexity of experience.

Since 2015, Catherine has been teaching art to third and fourth graders at Pocatello  Community Charter School (PCSS) in Pocatello, Idaho. A native of Alabama, Catherine married  Keith Reinhardt in 19?? who had been her co-worker in the PMSS Environmental Education program. In her biography on the PCSS website Catherine tells about her work and family:

I am an artist and enjoy drawing, painting, printmaking, and thinking about all things with ambiguous meaning. I love wildflowers and spending time outdoors. My family spends its free time running, skiing, and spending time on rivers.

Clearly, both Catherine and Keith were profoundly shaped by the devotional and magical influence of Mary Rogers and the many other skilled and devoted instructors with whom they worked. They were among the pioneers who helped to form one of the finest early programs of Environmental Education in the state of Kentucky at Pine Mountain Settlement School and, in turn, the program determined their lives.
