KATHERINE B. WRIGHT Staff

Katherine B. Wright came to Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1919 and stayed until 1921. She then returned in 1923 and stayed until 1925. Her official duties were as a teacher and as a Girl Scout Leader. She was close friends with co-worker Lucretia Garfield, who mentions “Kay” often in her correspondence as the two worked together on Girl Scout activities.

Like many of the staff at Pine Mountain, she was a keen observer of life at the School and of human nature. Her most lasting contribution to Pine Mountain was a short article she wrote about her experiences at the School during the Christmas season. Her article, written for The New-Church League Journal (Volume XXII, No. 3, December 1921), is titled “Glimpses of a Pine Mountain Christmas.” Her brief article was introduced by Ethel de Long Zande who noted,

“Poverty you find, lack of knowledge you find, conditions needing to be corrected, still, here in the Kentucky mountains are a people inherently fine, their native vigor unspent, their mental and spiritual resources so great that they bring hope to America.”  Ethel de Long Zande
