Teachers 1941-1942

Leona and Jess Burden were teachers at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the school year of 1941-1942. When Leona P. Burden came back to Pine Mountain in June of 2007 for the first time since those early years, she was 90 years old. Her daughter, Shirley McLaughlin brought her back to the campus where she had the opportunity to see all the changes that had taken place through the years. At the time of her visit, she was in a retirement home in Portland, Oregon.

Leona P. Burden was hired at the School to teach Home Economics and to supervise the Dining Hall in Laurel House Her husband, Jess Burden, taught Math, Physics, Chemistry and was in charge of the physical plant, including motor vehicles and the coal mine on the edge of the campus.

The following is a photographic memoir of her return visit to the Pine Mountain Campus in June of 2007, where she is accompanied by Nancy Adams, Director, and Mary Dresser, Assistant Director of the School.


Leona P. (Patterson) Burden was born on April 16, 1917, in Dandridge, Tennessee, to George and Josie Moree Patterson. She attended Berea (Kentucky) College, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics, Class of 1941.

She married Jess Wiggins Burden, a Physics major at Berea College, Class of 1941. He died in 2005.

She was 93 when she died on January 18, 2011, in West Linn, Oregon. She is survived by four of her five children: Thomas Earl, Shirley, Mary Joyce, and Jane.
