INTRODUCTION

The Community Fair Day is one of many annual events that has a long history at Pine Mountain Settlement School. It started in 1917 as an extension of the Harlan County Fair and the School’s “Farmer’s Day.”

While the fundamental program of the Fair has remained remarkably consistent, the scale and scope of the Fair have varied from year to year as interest in fairs has waxed and waned in the School, the community, and the nation.

Miss Katherine Petit (sic, Katherine Pettit),
Pine Mountain Settlement School
Pine Mountain, Harlan County, Ky.

My dear Miss Pettit:-

Your letter of September 11 reached my desk during my absence in western Kentucky. I find that it will be impossible for me to come to Pine Mountain on September 29th. School is opening here today and Dr. Koppius has been granted a leave of absence for one year. His place is being filled by Dr. Black who as a new man will require considerable assistance in getting on to the ropes. Another member of our teaching force, Professor T.M. Hahn, has to go immediately for an operation for appendicitis and will thus be off of our staff for several weeks. These two changes in our condition necessitate my personal attention to the work of the department for the next month or so. It is a matter of regret that I cannot be with you. Mrs. Webb had expected to come with me on our contemplated visit. She joins me in the expression of regret that she cannot revisit Harlan County at this time. I very greatly appreciate your invitation and hope that at some future time I may have the pleasure of visiting the school.

Thanking you again, I am,
Very sincerely yours,

[Signed] Wm. S. Webb.
