02 November 24, 1921. To “Prof. of Pine Mountain School” from Polly Jane Wagers, Lynch Mines, Ky, asking if she can send her two children to PMSS. “They have no dependence (sic) but me, their mother. ….John is nine years and Blanche 6.”

03 December 1, 1921. To Mrs. Polly Jane Wagers from [unsigned] “by E.K. Wells, Secy.” [Evelyn K. Wells] “Your children are too young for us to take, I am sorry to say. All we can do is put them on the waiting list until they are older.”

1925

04 July 28, 1925. To Miss K. Pettit from Mrs. Polly Kidd, Louellen, Ky. “As Mrs. Byrd has recommended your school to be a good one, I have a son to get in school this year….”

10 July 28, 1925. A save-a-place form for Pine Mountain School. Please save a place in the Pine Mountain School for: “John Wagers.” Born at:“Clay County Springel(?)” day of Month “Feb. 21.” School last attended: “Louellen, Ky.” Grade: 5. Names of parents or guardian: “Ed Kidd, Pollie Kidd.” Post office of parents or guardian: “Louellen, Ky.”

05 July 30, 1925. To Mrs. Kidd, Louellen, Harlan County, KY, from KP [Katherine Pettit], who is “filing your card and if your boy is the kind of a boy we would like to take, we shall be glad to try him. We do not want to take bad boys, or those who use tobacco or bad language.” Pettit encloses a circular concerning requirements and advises that school begins on August 24th.

06 August 2, 1925. To Miss Pettit from Mrs. Polly Kidd, enclosing $3.00(?) for her son’s tuition. “He doesn’t feel so well but I have been informed of the hospital which he may go to and have a treatment.”

07 August 7, 1925. To Pettit from Mrs. Pollie Kidd. “My boy John Wagers will be there to start to school….”

11 August 25, 1925. To Mrs. Polly Kidd from KP (Pettit), who has sent her son home on the logging train, as he was complaining of a stomach ache.

12 August 27, 1925. To “Pine Mountain School” from Mrs. Pollie Kidd, assuring Pettit that her son has arrived home and will return to school in a few days.

13 September 30, 1925. To Mrs. Polly Kidd, Black Mountain, Ky., from KP [Pettit]. “John…is perfectly well and happy now, and going to school and quite contented. He is anxious to hear from you and the children, so I hope you will write him often, but let him know that when he gets homesick, he is just to grin and bear it and stay right here. Then I think you will be pleased with him when you see him.”

14 October 1, 1925. Carbon copy of typewritten bill to Mr. Ed Kidd, Louellen, Ky. “Charges for John Wager; monthly fee for August ($.60), for part of September ($1.50), for October ($2.75), and for hospital expense (2 days, $1.20). Total: $6.05.

15 October 5, 1925. To Mrs. Polly Kidd from KP [Pettit]. “John was doing so well that I was sorry when he slipped off on Saturday morning. Of course the hard thing for him here was going without cigarettes. If you want him back…let him know that he has got to stay and got to mind….”

18 October 20, 1925. To Mrs. Polly Kidd, Black Mountain, Ky., from KP [Pettit], asking if her son is “with you safe and sound. He left here early one morning and we have never heard a word since.”

17 October 21, 1925. Carbon copy of typewritten receipt for John Wagers: “Account of Money Received and Expenses”: book rental, August, part of September, Infirmary 2 days. “August 23, Cash received $8.25.”

16 [No Date] To Pettit from Polly Kidd, Kinnier(?), KY, sending money to pay for John’s school expenses and asking that John’s clothes are sent home to him.
