FLORENCE REEVES Poetry
The following “Souvenir for Friends” is a small booklet of poems written by Florence Reeves after she worked as a housemother in 1922 at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Reeves collected many of the ballads, stories, and language idioms of neighbors in the Pine Mountain valley.
Besides a collector of folklore, Reeves was also a poet. The material found in her notes was a wealth of inspiration for her poetry. However, Souvenir For Friends, a collection of poems that she assembled for her friends to enjoy, does not center on Pine Mountain. The booklet that she deposited in the collections of the archives of the Pine Mountain Settlement School was instead largely centered on the Nantucket area of Massachusetts where Reeves lived for many years following her experience at the School. The work is included here as a writing sample of Reeves’ work.
