BERTHA SHEPARD, PMSS Visitor, 1938

Bertha Shepard came to Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1938 with two traveling companions, Labrida Hanby and Dorothy Whitehill. Shepard and Hanby, describing themselves as “…spinsters, optimistic and sincere,” lived in the town of Franklin, PA, and traveled to “seek a wider horizon and as much culture as could be acquired….”

The three women embarked on a car trip through Southern Appalachia and later Labrida and Dorothy traveled to Eastern Canada. Bertha wrote about their adventures in a journal titled “Little Journeys” and illustrated by her nephew, Chester Hunt. in the first story, she describes the trio’s visit to Pine Mountain, page images of which are available here. A newspaperwoman, Bertha first learned to set type and to proofread at the age of 17 in Elyria, Ohio, [Lorain County, Northeast Ohio]. She then became the proofreader for years for the Cleveland News*, Cleveland, Ohio. [*The Cleveland News was published from 1905 to 1960 when it was absorbed by the Cleveland Press.]

Bertha was born in 1886 to Heman W. Shepard (1853-1900) and Ida V. (Reed) Shepard (1858-1930). Her brother, Chester Watson Shepard (1889-1961) served as a private in Company G 16 of the infantry during World War I. She also had a younger sister, Hilda Marie Shepard, born in 1897.

Bertha E. Shepard died in 1946 in an accident at the age of 60. She was buried at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Elyria, Ohio.
