“Two spinsters, optimistic and sincere, set forth …” CHIEN CHAUD AND CULTURE SEEKERS ON THE KING’S HIGHWAY is the second “Little Journey” of Bertha Shepard and is included in the same journal of Bertha’s trip to Pine Mountain Settlement School. Following her trip into the Southern Appalachians and to Pine Mountain Settlement School, this journey to Canada included only her friend Labrida Handy. This second journey has no direct relationship to Pine Mountain but captures the adventuresome spirit of Bertha and Labrida as they explore Quebec and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

Throughout the journal they give their car, a Chevrolet coupe, the name of “Charon” and assign to themselves the names of “Gracie” (Bertha) and “Emeline” (Labrida).
