ARTS and CRAFT Early PMSS Department of Fireside Industries Brochure

A small brochure produced by the Print Shop at Pine Mountain Settlement School in the late 1930s-early 1940s. Associated with the larger Appalachian craft network called “Fireside Industries”, the Pine Mountain Fireside crafts were marketed throughout the United States.

Many of the items shown in the catalog are still being produced by Appalachian crafts workshops found at Folk Schools such as John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. , at Pine Mountain Settlement School, and other regional arts and crafts programs. Berea College Student Craft, in operation since 1893 has recently added a significant contemporary approach to the arts and crafts of the Appalachian Region. Many of those crafts may be found at Log House Sales near the Crafts center on the campus.  Many of the contemporary crafts programs pay tribute the earlier craft designs and materials seen in the Fireside Crafts brochure from Pine Mountain Settlement School.

Pine Mountain has recently (2023) re-initiated a crafts program with classes in metal smithing, dulcimer making, pottery, woodworking, weaving, corn-husk craft, and more open to the community and to outside instructors and participants.
