Text: Director Burton Rogers begins his letter to “Dear friends” with the photo of “this Pine Mountain space-age youngster, supporting his drawing paper on a pioneer millstone, symbolizes concurrent elements of old and new in Appalachia. National concern has centered on those parts of the ‘old’ which are outmoded, inadequate and slow to change. Pine Mountain Settlement School experiences these complex and critical realities of mountain life….” yet there is much about the young people that show promise, prompting Rogers to write this letter about “What’s new at Pine Mountain this year?”

Photographs and captions:

  • Girls walking together in uniform: “Girl Scouts, Troop 592, chartered October, 1965”
  • Girl playing dulcimer: “Mountain dulcimers made for sale”
  • Boy in uniform making a pie: “Cub Scouts, Pack 37, Chartered December, 1965”
  • Seated children playing recorders: “Recorder club”
  • Two adults cooking at a stove: “Parent-teachers’ chicken supper”

Text: Rogers continues his letter, stating that “there are more “new” projects than we can picture in one letter.” He then reports that “Our income this year has not covered our expenses” and asks for contributions.

“Sincerely,
[signed] Burton Rogers, Director”
