FLINT LOCK RIFLES
July 1921
” Given to him a year ago by Joe Williams of Viper, KY.. his father., Isaac Williams, had owned it for three years.. Isaac got it of Taylor Maggard, Git Maggard’s boy, who lived on Macy’s Creek, and come from West Virginia to Cutshin.. Taylor Maggard got it from Gordon Bailey, who lived on the Bailey Fork at Macey’s Creek. He in turn got it of a boy who lived on Big Leatherwood., who goes by the name of Kaisel.”
HISTORY OF THE FLINT-LOCK GUN
“This gun was first owned by an old man named Elijah Fuller, who was a soldier in the War of 1812, But I don’t think he used this gun while he was a soldier..
After the death of the old man, one of his sons sold the gun to one old man named James Patrick, who died at the age of 98 years. Many bear and deer have been killed with this gun, and she was used by these old men to shoot at [which was known as] matches where fat oxen were shot for and it is said that she always won the prize.”
RECORDED BY HELEN WYKLE 2004-06-27 from FERN HALL HAYES Recollections
These additional flintlock guns are in the possession of Pine Mountain. One is split. the story, as told by Fern Hayes [mother of Helen Hayes Wykle], is that the rifle was stolen.
