OLIVE COOLIDGE: Family Background

Olive Dame Coolidge (1920-2008), the daughter of Richard Bradford Coolidge and Ruth Dame Coolidge, was born in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1920. Educated and strong-willed, she is defined by her determination to address her future on her terms and to meet her ambition to become a nurse. The opportunity to gain experience with the Johns Hopkins-trained nurse, Grace Rood, at Pine Mountain attracted Olive Coolidge to the School and became a defining experience for her.

Olive Coolidge was familiar with settlement and folk schools through her family connections to the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Richard Bradford Coolidge, her father and 4th cousin of President Calvin Coolidge, served on the Board of Directors at the Folk School. He was also a bank president, served as a Mayor of the city of Medford, Massachusetts, and was elected to serve the State as a legislator.

Richard Bradford Coolidge’s father was Merrit B. Coolidge and Ruth’s father was Lorin Low Dame (1838-1903), an important New England author and botanist, hence the Dame-Coolidge references. The sisters of Olive’s mother Ruth were Daisy Gertrude Dame and Olive Dame Coolidge Campbell, the latter whose name is familiar to those who know the  John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. Both the Coolidge and the Dame families have a long history with social programs, motivated by their deep commitment to promoting the welfare of others and their deep involvement in their communities and families.
