Members of the Caudill Family have lived in the community of Pine Mountain since very early years. Several were among the student body and workers at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Two Caudills have become prolific and well-known writers: Harry M. Caudill and Rebecca Caudill (Ayars).

Caudill Family: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PMSS COLLECTIONS
Harold Caudill is listed among the PMSS students on the page for the 1949 GRADUATING CLASS. (See class photo in CONIFER 1949, page 6.) Harold Caudill’s article, “Mr. [Arthur] Dodd‘s Picture,” was published in the PINE CONE 1948 November, page 2. His article, “Winter’s On The Way!”, appeared in PINE CONE 1948-49, page 3.
Harry M. Caudill – (May 3, 1922 – November 29, 1990) was an American author, historian, lawyer, legislator, and environmentalist from Letcher County, in the coalfields of southeastern Kentucky. Author of Night Comes to the Cumberlands and other books on the region. Lived nearby in Whitesburg, KY. and was a frequent visitor at PMSS. GUIDE TO CONSULTANTS, FRIENDS… Alice Cobb writes in NOTES – 1976 about visiting Harry Caudill on a return visit to PMSS. See also VERTICAL FILE in PMSS Archive Room for material about Harry Caudill. Rebecca Caudill Ayars – (February 2, 1899 – October 2, 1985) was an American author of children’s literature with more than twenty books published. Her Tree of Freedom (Viking, 1949) was a Newbery Honor Book in 1950. A Pocketful of Cricket (Holt, 1964), illustrated by Evaline Ness, was a Caldecott Honor Book. Close friend of Mary Rogers, PMSS staff and member of the Board of Trustees of PMSS. One of ten children in the family of Susan and George Caudill of Harlan County, Kentucky. She was born in Poor Fork, now Cumberland, Kentucky. Listed under “Visitors to Campus,” GUIDE TO CONSULTANTS, FRIENDS…
Rebecca Caudill Ayars is listed as “author, friend, board of trustees 1967-?” in GUIDE TO BURTON ROGERS FILES, Box 1. She is also mentioned as an acquaintance of CONNIE FEARINGTON BROSI, a PMSS teacher in 1965. She is quoted several times concerning the Little School in the biography of MILLY MAHONEY. Watson Caudill is listed as a PMSS student from 1922 to 1923 in BOX 30 STUDENTS – Bo-C, c. 1919-1930, file #20-49.
