The area under study has been for many years one of the major coal-producing regions in the United States. It comprises the eastern quarter of the state of Kentucky, an area approximately 10,500 square miles and consists of the following counties Bell, Bowen, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Clinton, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Jackson, Knot, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Ledger, Lewis, McCrary, McGaughan, Martin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Wayne, Whitley, and Wolf.
The subject matter relates primarily to population shifts, major fields of economic activity, the pattern of employment wages and per capita income, and bank deposits in showing developments within the area during the recent past. An effort has been made to indicate comparable trends both on a national and state level reports of Kentucky’s Department of Economic Security, the Department of Rural Sociology, and the Bureau of Business Research of the University of Kentucky. The Federal Reserve Bank, the US Bureau of Census, and other releases have served as sources of information.
